Pool Filter Sand Change | Pool Pond Spa Freeway Park
Pool Sand Change · East Rand · Since 1999

Your pool sand has stopped filtering.

After 12 to 18 months, the rough grains that trap dirt are worn smooth. Cloudy water, algae you can't shift, filter pressure climbing on the gauge. We pull the old media, fit new silica or Eco Glass, check the laterals, and your filter is back to peak in 1 to 2 hours.

R From R900 silica. From R1,800 Eco Glass. New media included.
1 to 2 hours on site. Same day finish on standard filters.
Laterals checked. Photos and quote if anything is broken.
Old media removed. Disposed properly. No mess left behind.

Silica or Eco Glass.

Both do the same job. Silica is the traditional choice and costs less today. Eco Glass costs a bit more upfront but lasts up to 3 times longer, uses less water on every backwash, and works with less chlorine. Over 5 years, Eco Glass works out cheaper.

The science

Why does pool filter sand need replacing?

Most pool owners assume sand lasts forever. Sort of true, sort of not. The sand itself lasts forever. But its job as a filter media does not.

Fresh sand is rough on purpose

Pool filter sand looks like regular beach sand to the naked eye. Under a microscope, the grains are jagged and textured. Those tiny burrs are what trap dirt, algae, dead bugs and dust as water passes through. Clean water comes out the other side.

Old sand has been worn smooth

Years of water flow grind those rough edges down. Think of pebbles on a beach or in a stream. The same weathering that smooths river rocks happens inside your filter. Once the grains are smooth, there is nothing left for dirt to grip onto. The muck passes straight through, back into your pool.

The signs your sand is done: cloudy water that will not clear, algae that comes back no matter how much chlorine you dose, filter pressure climbing on the gauge, and shorter and shorter intervals between backwashes. If your pool is fighting you, the sand is the first thing to check.

In a sand change visit

What we actually do.

Same six steps, every filter. We document each one with photos so you have a record. Standard 2 to 3 bag filters take 1 to 2 hours from start to finish.

1 · Initial inspection

Lid, gasket, connections, multiport handle. Photos before we touch anything.

2 · Remove old media

Filter opened, old sand, glass or fibre removed and bagged for disposal.

3 · Internal inspection

Lateral assembly, standpipe, internal fittings. Anything broken gets photographed.

4 · New media added

High grade silica or 100% recycled Eco Glass, exactly the right quantity for your filter.

5 · Reassemble and test

Lid bolted back, new gasket if needed, system pressure tested for leaks.

6 · Backwash, rinse, dispose

Full backwash and rinse cycle to clear dust off the new media. Old media taken with us.

Word of mouth

What our customers say.

"My filter hadn't been changed in 4 years. PPS swapped it out in under 2 hours, showed me a broken lateral they found, replaced it on the spot. Water has been gin clear ever since. Worth every cent."
Pieter, Sunward Park
"Went with the Eco Glass option. More expensive upfront but the team explained the maths: less backwashing, less chemicals, lasts way longer. 8 months in and the water has never looked better. Best decision I made for the pool."
Lerato, Bedfordview
"I got 3 quotes for my 3 bag filter. Two were vague about what was included. PPS quoted R1,199.99 silica all in, told me upfront they'd send photos if anything was broken inside. No surprises on the day. That's how it should be done."
Sandile, Brakpan
Quick answers

Common questions.

Still wondering? WhatsApp us. Real human, fast reply.

How often does my pool filter sand need to be changed?

Every 12 to 18 months for silica sand, 24 months absolute maximum. Eco Glass lasts up to 3 times longer thanks to its non porous structure. Sand that has not been changed loses its grip on dirt and lets it pass back into the pool. Filter pressure also creeps up which puts strain on the pump.

What's the difference between silica sand and Eco Glass?

Silica is the traditional pool filter media, mined silica sand graded for pool use. Eco Glass is 100 percent recycled amorphous fused silicon dioxide. Eco Glass filters finer (down to 4 microns), uses up to 25 percent less water during backwashing, up to 50 percent less chemicals, and lasts up to 3 times longer. Costs a bit more upfront but works out cheaper over 5 years.

How do I know what size filter I have?

Filter size is measured by how many bags of media it holds. Small spa or plunge pools use 1 bag. Standard residential pools use 2 to 3 bag. Larger pools use 4 to 5 bag. Lap pools and commercial use 7 bag. If you're unsure, send us a photo of your filter on WhatsApp and we'll tell you exactly what size you have.

Is the new media included in the price?

Yes. The price covers the technician's visit, the new media (silica or Eco Glass), the labour, the backwash and the disposal of the old media. No surprise charges on the day. The only extras would be if we find a broken lateral or cracked multiport that needs replacing, which we'd photograph and quote separately before doing.

How long does a sand change take?

Typical 2 to 3 bag filter takes 1 to 2 hours from arrival to driving off. Larger 5 to 7 bag filters take 2 to 3 hours. If the old media has caked or hardened (often the case after 3+ years without a change), add another 30 minutes. We'll let you know on arrival if anything looks unusual.

Do you check the laterals while the filter is open?

Yes. Once the old media is out, we inspect the lateral assembly, standpipe, and internal fittings for damage. Broken laterals are common after 3+ years and they cause sand to blow back into the pool no matter how new the media is. If we find anything broken, we WhatsApp you with photos and a separate quote before replacing.

What if my filter is a top mount instead of side mount?

We service both. Side mount filters have the multiport valve on the side of the tank. Top mount filters have it on top. The pricing structure is similar but the work order differs slightly because top mount usually means removing the entire valve assembly to access the media. WhatsApp us a photo and we'll confirm the type and price.

Do I get a discount if I sign up for weekly maintenance?

Yes. If you book a sand change and then sign up for our weekly maintenance within 7 days, you get 15 percent off maintenance for 3 months. All chemicals included. No contract. The reason: balanced water and proper backwashing extends the life of your new media. It's the cheapest insurance you can buy for the sand change you just paid for.

Simple and upfront

How a service works

  1. Get in touch

WhatsApp 061 568 2399 is quickest, or give us a call. Tell us what you need and send a few photos if you can.

  2. We quote you

Most jobs we can quote straight from your photos at no charge. If a job needs a technician to come and look first, that is a R450 call out, and it comes off your invoice the moment you go ahead.

  3. We book you in

Once you accept the quote we schedule the work, usually within 1 to 2 working days depending on the diary.

  4. We do the work

Your job is handled by our own team, James, Ishmael and Lucious. You do not have to be home, we just need access to the pool and equipment, though we prefer you there so we can hand over properly.

  5. Handover

We show you what was done and how to look after it. Payment is by Yoco or EFT.

Booking and contact

Booking and call out questions

What does a call out cost?
R450. If you accept the quote the call out comes off your invoice, so you are not paying twice. Quotes from photos are free.
When can you come out?
Most jobs are booked within 1 to 2 working days, depending on how full the diary is that week. WhatsApp us and we will give you the next available slot.
What do your services cost?
Every job is priced on its own. Starting prices for clean ups, maintenance, sand changes, pump installations and PoolSkim installation are on each service page. For anything else, send us a few photos on WhatsApp and we will quote you for free.
What areas do you cover?
Boksburg, Benoni, Brakpan, Springs, Kempton Park, Edenvale, Bedfordview, Germiston, Alberton and Nigel. Plots, farms and areas outside this list are by arrangement at a higher rate, and we always tell you the extra upfront.
How do I pay?
Payment is by Yoco or EFT. We work job by job, so there are no accounts to open.
Do I need to be home?
No. We just need access to your pool and equipment, so let us know how to get in and make sure any dogs are secured. We do prefer you there at the end so we can hand over.
Do you work weekends and public holidays?
The shop and phone line are open over weekends and public holidays for advice, sales and water testing. On site service and installation work is booked Monday to Friday.
What types of pool do you service?
All of them. Concrete, marbelite, fibreglass and vinyl, on both chlorine and salt systems.
Do you do repairs?
Yes. Pumps, filters, leaks, automatic cleaners and the usual pool problems. The only things we do not do are building brand new pools and major structural renovations.
My pool is green. How fast can you fix it?
It depends on how far gone it is. Many pools are swim ready within a few days, while a badly neglected pool can take 1 to 2 weeks to bring back properly.
Do you offer free water testing?
Yes, onsite across the East Rand. Book it on WhatsApp. We test your water, tell you exactly what it needs, and you collect the chemicals from us.
Do you deliver?
Free delivery in Boksburg on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Order from us and we bring it to your gate.
Can I cancel or move my booking?
No problem, just let us know at least one day before so we can offer the slot to someone else.
What guarantee do I get?
Your workmanship is guaranteed. The exact cover depends on the job and the products fitted. For example, pump installations include a 1 year installation warranty on top of the manufacturer warranty on the pump.
What if it rains on the day?
If the weather stops us finishing, we come back on the next available day to complete the job.
